Victory Day and the Politics of Memory

"For the fifth time, the country celebrates Victory Day while being dragged by its leadership into the largest conflict in Europe since 1945. A conflict that is meaningless, unnecessary, and criminal. And it is already clear how much work will have to be done with the politics of memory after the end of the current confrontation and - especially - after the change in the state of our country. So that May 9 is a day of memory, and not a tool for justifying militarism. So that the 'parade ideology' does not obscure the 'never again' formula hard-won by our ancestors. So that wars against memory and the building of a hierarchy of victims pleasing to the regime do not happen, as is happening before our eyes with the Gulag Museum. So that criminal articles about notorious 'justifications' do not serve as a tool of political repression. So that Victory Day, rightfully bearing the epithet Great, does not divide, but unites.

«Уже в пятый раз страна отмечает день Победы будучи втянута своим руководством в крупнейший с 1945 года конфликт в Европе. Конфликт бессмысленный, ненужный, преступный. И уже ясно, как много придется работать с политикой памяти после завершения нынешнего противостояния и - особенно - после изменения состояния нашей страны. Чтобы 9 мая было днем памяти, а не инструментом оправдания милитаризма. Чтобы “парадная идеология” не заслоняла выстраданной нашей предками формулы “никогда больше”. Чтобы не происходило войн против памяти и выстраивания угодной режиму иерархии жертв, как это происходит на наших глазах с Музеем ГУЛАГа. Чтобы уголовные статьи о пресловутых “оправданиях” не служили орудием политических репрессий. Чтобы день Победы, по полному праву носящей эпитет Великой, не разделял, а объединял.
