Sentenced for 10 Years in Prison for Seeking Peace

Vasily Neustroev is a 30-year-old Russian political activist, a member of the Yabloko party, and a dedicated advocate for fair elections. On April 8, 2026, he was unjustly sentenced to 10 years in a penal colony. His true "offense" was standing up for democracy and opposing the war.

Prisoner of conscience

In June 2023, Vasily was swept up in a massive, politically motivated crackdown against the democratic youth movement Vesna (Spring). In a Kafkaesque twist of the Russian justice system, Vasily was charged with "organizing an extremist community" and inciting mass riots, despite never actually being a member of the Vesna movement. During a closed-door trial riddled with procedural violations, the court ignored the facts and handed down a devastating decade-long sentence.

Freedom is stolen, not the spirit

Beyond the fabricated criminal case, Vasily is a kind-hearted man who spent his freedom caring for rescued animals at local shelters and protecting the democratic process as an election commission member. Today, his life has been stolen from him. He is officially recognized as a political prisoner by the Memorial Human Rights Defence Centre and a prisoner of conscience by Amnesty International.
